Nancy Porter Childress

When one of our members reaches the age of 90, he/she get to choose a book for
WVGS to purchase. The book is then presented at a Monthly Membership Meeting,
but it is returned to the Library to be added to our collection. At the May
meeting, that honor was bestowed upon Nancy Porter Childress.

She was born on December 22, 1934 in a log cabin in Noel, Missouri, where she
lived until the second grade, when her parents moved to Pueblo, Colorado. She
graduated from Central High School in 1953. She married Arthur Paul Childress in
June of that year and divorced in 1969. They had five children, with two
surviving now.

She is active in various organizations, including
First Presbyterian Church, the Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR), the Colonial Dames
17C, Rosie the Riveters, Hospice of the Valley, and
the Bell Stitchers.

She stays quite busy and loves genealogy, having
has compiled several books on her family history
that she has donated to WVGS.

The book selected is Recollections of Somerset
County’s Earliest Years
, published by the Somerset
Historical Society in Pennsylvania, where her
ancestors once lived.

This should have happened last year – but we did
not know she had turned 90 last December. Please put
your birth year in your membership information…or
we don’t know!
