Suzie Glass – February 2025

Last month, I asked you all for nominations for the Volunteer Appreciation Awards. We have honored Aides as a group before, and we have honored volunteers who are Aides for other contributions they made. Still, we haven’t honored often enough an individual Aide for good old straightforward “outstanding member service.”

We do not ask or expect Aides to be subject experts nor to help members with their research. However, when they do, it makes a difference. Our honoree this month is Suzie Glass.

During one of her shifts, a new member asked if Suzie could give him any advice on finding his ancestors in New York. Suzie guided him through several shifts and even assisted him in between, ultimately helping him successfully locate ancestors he might not have found otherwise. Our award
winner grew up in Knox County, Indiana, where parts of her family have resided since before the Revolutionary War. She came to Arizona in 1991 for graduate school at the University of Arizona. She’d been introduced to genealogy through a 4th-grade project but didn’t start seriously researching her ancestors until the late 1990s. One of her favorite memories was the look on her sister’s face when she told her she’d married a cousin – a 5th cousin, but still….

She discovered WVGS during COVID while looking for a FamilySearch affiliate library. She was
the new Registrar for her DAR chapter and needed the library for research. She joined because of the Fold3 access and became an Aide in the fall of 2021 when we reopened the Library on Saturdays

I’ve been a member of WVGS since 2009, and one of the most familiar conversations over that time has been stories of Aides “aiding” – sharing their expertise and experiences, making the computers do what they are supposed to, consulting on resources. So, I am happy we are honoring one of them this month.
