WVGS Classes/Workshops


To help you with your Genealogy, we offer a variety of basic-advanced Genealogy related classes/workshops.  Sessions are held in our Library in our Traditional classroom and our New PC classroom.

 

We cover the ins and outs of Genealogy, Genealogy Libraries, Genealogy Computer Programs, Technology Aids, Preserving Memories and Photos.  Classes may be registered and paid for at the library, on line or at our monthly Monday meetings. register online for classes

Novice Genealogy

 

A Basic Course for Beginning Family Research


This class will focus on the first steps needed to get you started on your research. No prior knowledge is necessary.

 

Introduction to: census, vital records, church, probate, land, immigration, naturalization,and military records with related papers to be found in each...what to look for & where to find it.

 

This class is recurring monthly on the 3rd Friday; unless noted otherwise. It is one session only.

Getting the Most from Ancestry.com

 

Tuesday, 1:00 pm- 3:30 pm

This class will focus on the differences between the Ancestry Library Edition (available at the WVGS Library) and personal paid subscriptions, as well as search strategies and "hidden" resources at Ancestry.com. We will discuss:

 

  • the Ancestry Menu,
  • Search techniques, including when and how to use Wild Card, Exact, and other search types,
  • Ancestry Collections and Databases,
  • How and when to use the Ancestry Card Catalog,
  • Pros and cons of Ancestry Trees and the "little green leaf,"
  • What to do when you think you've exhausted what's available on Ancestry.com.


This class will be geared to beginning and intermediate researchers, but more advanced participants should also find it useful. You may wish to bring your laptop or tablet, but it is not required.


The class is limited to 20 students.
The cost is $11.00 for members; $13.00 for non-members (includes $1 for handouts)

Whether because of new clues, boundary changes or migration, our research always takes us to "new" geographic areas.

 

Learning about the records and history of each geographic area in which our ancestors lived, and how to find those records, is crucial to successful family history research.

 

This class is for the novice to intermediate researcher, but more advanced participants will also benefit. An easy to follow format will be given to start research in a new geographic area.

Using DNA Tools to Find Common Ancestors

 

Wednesday, 1:00 - 3:00 pm

This class is for those who have taken a DNA test with 23andMe, FTDNA (Family Finder), or have uploaded to GedMatch.

 

The class will focus on using chromosome browsers and DNA segments to find common ancestors and solve genealogy problems.

 

Other tools such as "In-Common-With" will be discussed.

For those who are considering testing or have tested at any of the DNA testing companies and are wondering where to
start, this is a beginner’s class that even those who think they’ve figured it out will enjoy.

 

The class curriculum emphasizes learning in different ways—visual, audial, tactile and theoretical. You’ll have the chance to play with learning tools, test your smarts and we might even have nap time!

 

Bring your questions about those teeny pieces of DNA and how they get in your family tree.

This class is essential for anyone participating in WVGS's trip to the Genealogy Center at Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the fall of 2019.

 

Even if you don't plan to travel with us in October, you will learn about one of the largest genealogy libraries in the U.S., as well as skills that are useful in planning any research trip. Topics to be covered include:
