WVGS Classes/Workshops


To help you with your Genealogy, we offer a variety of basic-advanced Genealogy related classes/workshops.  Sessions are held in our Library in our Traditional classroom and our New PC classroom.

 

We cover the ins and outs of Genealogy, Genealogy Libraries, Genealogy Computer Programs, Technology Aids, Preserving Memories and Photos.  Classes may be registered and paid for at the library, on line or at our monthly Monday meetings. register online for classes

Novice Genealogy


This class will focus on the first steps needed to get you started on your research. No prior knowledge is necessary.

 

This class is one session only, recurring on the 3rd Friday of the month unless noted differently.

 

When registering, please indicate the date for which you are requesting.

FamilySearch.org is more than a Family Tree. Learn how to use this valuable free website, containing images of original records from all over the world, including:

  • how to browse unindexed records
  • and how to find out what records are available.

  • How to find and reference them,
  • why some are not available from home,
  • and where you can find those.

The class will offer the following:

 

  • You will receive an overview of the Family History Library and its resources so that you will know what to expect.

  • You will learn what items to take.

  • You will receive tips on how to set objectives for your
    research.

  • You will learn what homework you need to do before the trip.

  • You will learn how FamilySearch.org can help in your trip preparation.

  • You will receive tips on how to organize your materials in order to attack the Library and maximize limited research time.

Getting Started: Researching in a New Geographic Area

 

February 20, 2018; Tuesday 1:00-3:00 pm

 

Whether because of new clues, boundary changes or migration; our research always takes us to "new to us" geographic areas.

 

Learning about the records and history of each geographic area in which our ancestors lived is crucial to successful family history research.

 

This class is for the novice to intermediate researcher.

 

An easy to follow format will be given to start research in a new geographic area.

Learn how much is available to you on the Library computers!

 

Each session will cover different topics such as:

- Computer Basics

- Existing Desktop

- WVGS Webpages

- Ancestry

- World Vital Records

- New England Historical and

- Genealogical Society databases

 

The lab computers are PC’s but MacIntosh users can easily learn to use them.

This will be a hands-on class in the computer lab limited to 9 students.

DNA Kindergarden

 

October 17, November 14, 2017; January 9, March 13, 2018

 

Tuesdays 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm

 

For those who are considering testing or have tested at any of the DNA testing companies and are wondering where to start, this is a beginner’s class that even those who think they’ve figured it out will enjoy.

 

The class curriculum emphasizes learning in different ways—visual, audial, tactile and theoretical. You’ll have the chance to play with learning tools, test your smarts and we might even have nap time!

 

Bring your questions about those teeny pieces of DNA and how they get in your family tree.
